What is the World Rehabilitation Alliance?

The World Rehabilitation Alliance (WRA) is a WHO-hosted global network of 120+ organizations that advocates for the implementation of the WHO Rehabilitation 2030 Initiative and World Health Assembly resolution WHA76.6 on strengthening rehabilitation in health systems.

Its members include governments, intergovernmental organizations, civil society, professional bodies, academic institutions, philanthropic organizations and private sector entities, united by a shared commitment to strengthening rehabilitation in health systems and advancing functioning within global health and development.

Why rehabilitation matters

Globally, an estimated 2.6 billion people, one in three, could benefit from rehabilitation (Global Burden of Disease 2021). Rehabilitation optimizes functioning and enables people to return to work, learning, family and community life. Yet in some low- and middle-income countries, more than half of those who need rehabilitation do not receive it.

The Alliance develops policy briefs, position statements and factsheets with its members, convenes members and partners at major health and policy events, and contributes to global policy discussions, including the World Health Assembly, UN high-level meetings on health and the post-2030 development agenda.

Strategic Plan 2025-2030

Advancing Rehabilitation and Functioning in Health Systems Globally

The Strategic Plan sets out the Alliance's direction to 2030 through five strategic priorities:

  • 01 Accelerate Rehabilitation's Integration into Health Systems
  • 02 Advance Functioning as a Third Dimension of Population Health
  • 03 Champion the Investment Case for Functioning and Rehabilitation
  • 04 Mobilise a Coordinated Global Advocacy Movement
  • 05 Sustain and Grow the Alliance
